The Falcons used a strong second half to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over district rival Cosumnes River on Friday afternoon at Falcon Stadium. After a scoreless – but not uneventful - first half, the Falcons finally got on the board in the 72nd minute when freshman Emma Thompson headed in a free kick from freshman Kaylee Lemmo for the 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, freshman Michaela Mayer made it 2-0 with a 20-yard shot to the upper corner of the goal. Despite being down by two goals, Cosumnes River did not give up; the Hawks pressed hard and found the net off a corner kick to make it a one goal game with ten minutes to play. But from that point, the Falcons clamped down defensively to secure the victory. With the win, the Falcons improved to 12-3-1 overall and more importantly, moved into second place in the Big 8 at 9-3. The women will play a non-conference match at Butte today (Monday) before taking on Sac City on Tuesday evening in Sacramento.
