Beavers deny Falcons' attempt at season sweep

As expected, the huge showdown between Big 8 rivals Folsom Lake and American River went to a fifth set on Wednesday night at Falcon Gym before the Beavers finally prevailed, 13-25, 25-20, 25-19, 21-25, 15-10.  The match had a bit of everything, including powerful kills, big blocks, stellar defensive digs, and even some ugly miscues.  In fact, the victory was probably determined by the team making the fewest errors.  Unfortunately for the Falcons, three service errors in the final set doomed the outcome. The Falcons had stretches of brilliance, as evidenced by the 25-13 opening set dominance.  But they also managed to give away too many points, especially in the deciding fifth set.  Falcon sophomore Caitlin Dillon had her powerful right arm working, but the Beavers countered with quick sets to middle hitter Kendall Welpott all night long, and outside hitter Allison Linder also torched the Falcons with numerous kills.  For the Falcons, Julin Kenison put up big offensive numbers and Madi Pearce was a defensive stalwart, digging kills from the back row.

The Falcons (14-4, 6-3 in Big 8) must regroup quickly as they face Sierra (14-7, 7-2 in Big 8) on Friday night in Rocklin.
