Falcon women defeat CRC, 2-1

The Falcons survived a scare from LRCCD sister college Cosumnes River on Friday afternoon with a 2-1 win at CRC.  The Hawks played better than their 2-8-2 record, utilizing a stout defense and trying to neutralize the Falcons' team speed and athleticism.  Falcon freshman Avery Pieri  got the Falcons on the board with her goal, a header off a free kick by Cassandra Herrman in the 17th minute.  That turned out to be the only goal of the first half as the Falcons had near-misses from Kalyn Amezcua and Taylor Curtis.  The Hawks served notice they meant business when they tied the score early in the second half with a goal off a corner kick, but the Falcons responded soon after with another goal by Pieri – her team-leading 9th of the season.  Pieri's second goal was a spectacular free kick over the wall of CRC defenders that sailed into the upper right corner of the goal.  The 2-1 score held up over the final 25 minutes of the match despite the Hawks' desperate efforts to even the score.  Falcon midfielder Mia Solorio-Smith was particularly effective on defensive and was instrumental in shutting down many of the Hawks' attacks.

The Falcons (9-0-2 overall, 3-0 in Big 8) will host Sacramento City (4-6 overall, 0-3 in Big 8) on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 pm, then travel to American River for a Friday evening match under the lights at 6:00 pm.
