Women's soccer: Diablo Valley ends Falcons’ unbeaten streak at 17

After 17 straight matches without a loss to open the 2017 season, the Falcons finally felt the sting of losing on Tuesday afternoon at Diablo Valley College as they fell to the Vikings, 2-1.   As usual, the Falcons opened the match with a strong offensive attack that produced at least three shots on goal, but failed to find the net.  Meanwhile, the Vikings were creating chances of their own and eventually scored the game's first goal in the 20th minute.  The Falcons managed to tie the score 10 minutes later when freshman Riley Spitzer connected after a great pass from Tiara Webb The two teams continued the physical battle throughout the second half with both goalkeepers getting a workout between the posts.  In the 72nd minute,  a DVC corner kick produced a Viking goal for a 2-1 lead.  With the final minutes ticking away, the Falcons desperately tried to find the tying goal - like they had last Friday against Santa Rosa -  but the DVC defense held strong for the 2-1 win.  Despite the loss, the Falcons remain solidly in first place in the Big 8 at 10-1-2, seven points ahead of second-place Sierra.  The Wolverines will visit Falcon Stadium on Friday night at 6:30 pm for the Falcons' final home match of the regular season.
