Falcon women stun Solano with buzzer-beater win!

Trailing by 8 points with less than three minutes to play, the FLC women's basketball team turned a probable loss into a stunning victory on Thursday night at Falcon Gym, winning 61-59 over Solano College.  The Falcons led by two points after one quarter, but never led again until Jasmine Hess sank a 12-foot jumper with less than a second left in the game to break a 59-59 tie.  Down by five points with two minutes to play, guard Macie Purbaugh put the Falcons in position to win when she sank her only 3-pointer of the game, then followed that 30 seconds later with two clutch free throws that tied the score.  Neither team managed to score during several possessions over the final 90 seconds until Hess got the ball at the free throw line, made two moves, and sank the game-winner.  The winning basket was retribution for Hess, who until then had experienced a rare miserable shooting night, making just 2 of 16.  But she calmly nailed the one that counted most as the Falcon bench erupted.

Despite her shooting woes, Hess led the Falcons with 12 points, including 4-of-4 free throws, while Purbaugh tallied 9 points and 9 assists.  Forward Eva Graf made the most of her first start, scoring 9 points - including 5-of-5 free throws - and grabbing 8 rebounds while playing oustanding defense.

The Falcons improved to 4-8 as they completed their non-conference schedule with consecutive wins.  They'll open Big 8 Conference play on Wednesday (Dec 22) at Cosumnes River (0-2) at 5:30 pm.
