Falcons snap losing streak with doubleheader sweep

Anxious to put an end to their four-game losing streak, the Falcons traveled to Santa Rosa on Saturday and emphatically started a winning streak of their own with a 14-4 blowout of the Bear Cubs, then followed that with a 3-0 shutout to sweep the doubleheader.   The Falcons scored 11 runs in the first three innings of the opener and collected 20 hits in the game, including three doubles by freshman 2b Adriana Bridges.  Catcher Emma Gaytan continued her recent hot streak with 3 hits and 4 RBI, Maddy Larson was 4-for-4, and pitcher Gigi Mendez had 3 hits and added 3 RBI.  Mendez pitched a complete game (5 innings due to 8-run mercy rule) and allowed just 6 hits and 3 earned runs to record the win.

In game two, freshman lefty Kelsey Wurm pitched a complete-game 3-hit shutout to lead the Falcons to a 3-0 win.  Sophomore leftfielder Val Garcia provided all the offense needed when she hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning, driving in Maddy Larson and Haley BusbyEmma Gaytan added two more hits, raising her batting average to .400.  The Falcons' overall record is now 17-5; they evened their Big 8 record at 4-4 and are now in 4th place.  This week, they'll travel to Delta (12-7 overall, 3-4 in Big 8) on Tuesday before hosting Sac City (20-4, 5-3) for a doubleheader on Saturday at Falcon Diamond.
