With a stout defense leading the way, the Falcons came from behind to defeat Merritt in their Bay Valley Conference home opener. Merritt scored first off a penalty kick in the 23rd minute, but that turned out to be the only time the Thunderbirds would find the net. The Falcons answered back in the 36th minute with a penalty kick goal by sophomore Gus Chima. Less than two minutes later, the suddenly energized Falcons would take the lead on a free kick by Ian Callender from just outside the penalty area, making it 2-1 at the half. With the defense shutting down Merritt's advances, the Falcons controlled the game throughout the second half. In the 69th minute, Christian Cardoza headed in a nice pass from Nick Valentine for a 3-1 Falcon lead that finalized the scoring. With the win, the Falcons improved to 3-7 overall and find themselves in a 4-way tie for second place in the Bay Valley Conference at 1-1.
