Rough Day On The Road

The FLC men's soccer team opened their Bay Valley Conference season yesterday with a hard-fought 2-0 loss to host Mendocino College.  The Falcons had some excellent first-half chances, including two point-blank shots – one missed shot and one incredible save on Gus Chima's shot – but could not convert.  With the score tied 0-0 at halftime, the Falcons felt good about their chances, especially considering the way they were playing.  But ten minutes into the second half, Mendocino took advantage of a defensive lapse in the Falcons' midfield and capitalized with a breakaway goal.  As the half progressed, the Falcons intensified their scoring efforts but couldn't even the score.  Two shots hit the post, and several more peppered the Eagles' goalie, but nothing went in.  With the Falcons pressing hard on the offensive end, Mendocino managed to add a late goal with two minutes remaining for the final tally.  The loss drops the Falcons to 2-7 overall, 0-1 in the BVC.
