Folsom Lake Falcons Secure Thrilling Victory in Season Finale
Folsom - In a match-up that saw multiple lead changes, the Falcons were able to come out on top over the Wolverines by the slimmest of margins, 71-70 on sophomore night to close out the season!
It was sophomore night for the Falcons so the team had an edge to start the game that gave the impression that they did not want to send the sophomores out on a losing note. With great energy to start the game, the Falcons forced Sierra to call an early timeout when the score was 9-5 in favor of the Falcons. The home team came out and forced the Wolverines to scramble early try to stop the long range shot and the attacks to the basket. After the early timeout, the Falcons tried to pick up where they left off with great defensive pressure and forcing the Wolverines into tough shots. Sierra was able to find their groove and got things rolling when they went on a little run to take their first lead at the 12:29 mark with two free throws to go up 14-13. The last eight minutes of the half saw a flurry of action with 5 lead changes and 3 ties. Sierra went into the break at halftime up 39-36.
In the second half, the Falcons came out with the mindset to control the glass and inch their way back from the small deficit. Once the Falcons took the lead at 47-44 with 15:50 to go in the second half, they were able to push the lead to 13 where it looked like the lead was going to be safe and the Falcons would run away with the game. Sierra had other ideas and decided to go to a trapping defense to cause some chaos. The chaos allowed them to get back into the game and with 1:00 left to go in the game, Sierra hit a big 3 to tie the game. This is where the excitement started to unfold because on the very next play, the Falcons were fouled where they only made 1 out of 2 free throws to hold the 1 point advantage. Sierra went down and scored a lay-up to go up by 1 with 33 seconds. The Falcons turn the ball over on their ensuing possession and were forced to foul Sierra with only 27 seconds left in the game while still down 1. Sierra goes to the free throw line to shoot a 1 and 1 but when they miss the first shot, the Falcons rebound the ball and push the ball to the offensive end and call a timeout. The play breaks down and sophomore Tyson Hazel is able to drive the ball and score the winning basket with only 4.2 seconds remaining. Sierra did have one last possession but the shot hit off the front of the rim to preserve the 1 point victory.
