Women’s soccer holds off Delta

Despite their gaudy 6-0-1 record in the Big 8, the FLC women knew their Tuesday afternoon match against Delta College would be anything but easy.  Always known for their grit, it was evident from the opening whistle that the Mustangs came to Folsom well prepared.  With their defense geared to stop the Falcons' top scorers (Andrea Martinez with 18 goals, Tiara Webb with 10 goals & 9 assists), the Mustangs stifled the home team's attacks throughout the first half.  Delta goalkeeper Amanda Leal was stellar as she thwarted numerous Falcon shots.  After a scoreless first half that saw both teams elevate their level of play, FLC head coach Donny Ribaudo made some adjustments to his attack.  The payoff came quick, as Andrea Martinez drew a foul in the box just seven minutes into the second half as she was dribbling toward the goal.  The resulting penalty kick put the Falcons ahead 1-0.  Just six minutes later, Tiara Webb – whose speed was unmatched by any one of the Mustangs – took a breakaway to the goal, then dropped a pass to Breanna Brumet for the Falcons' second goal.  After the Mustangs scored on a breakaway of their own with ten minutes to play to make it 2-1, there were some tense moments as they desperately looked to tie the match.  But the Falcon defense held strong as they closed out the victory.
