Falsons end skid with walk-off win over Sierra

The Falcons resumed their three-game Big 8 Conference series against Sierra College on Thursday at Falcon Field and walked off with an exciting 2-1 victory. FLC starter Brandon Bachman gave the Falcons something that's been missing for several weeks: quality starting pitching. With the Falcon offense sputtering, Bachman kept his team in the game, allowing just one run (on a squeeze bunt) on five hits over 5-2/3 innings. Relievers Nolan Murphy and Shane Gustafson did their jobs as well by not allowing the Wolverines any runs. Still down 1-0 entering the ninth, a leadoff single by Jack Rotteveel and a one-out single by Kale Leach put the tying run on third and possible winning run on first. Surprisingly, Sierra's coach chose to stick with his tiring pitcher, who was now in his ninth inning of work. Falcon Sophomore Grant Heisinger then tied the game with his RBI single to left. After a walk to Grant Dragmire loaded the bases with one out, pinch hitter Greg Vaughn ended the drama with his game-winning single to left, scoring pinch-runner Jacob Jones as the Falcon bench erupted.
The much-needed win gives the Falcons a 1-4 record in the Big 8, and 9-11 overall.  They play at Sierra on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm.
