Falcons fall to Hartnell, then sweep Butte

The Folsom Lake Classic Tournament kicked off on Friday afternoon with a close match between Hartnell College and the Falcons, which Hartnell won 3-1.  The opening set was a back-and-forth affair and looked like the Falcons would win when they led 24-21.  But the Panthers rallied to tie the score at 24, then the teams traded serves before Hartnell ended it at 28-26.  The second set belonged to the Falcons from start to finish (25-15) with never a doubt about the outcome.  The Panthers took the third set 25-20, then finished off the Falcons with 25-16 fourth set win.

The Falcons were led by freshman Lexi Berry, who finished with 14 kills and 7 digs, and sophomore Mikayla Ide with 8 kills, 17 digs, and 4 service aces.  Sophomore setter Kendall Hughes tallied 32 sets and freshman Abi Seabury made her presence felt with 8 kills and 2 blocks.

The third and final match of the tournament pitted the Falcons against Butte College, which the Falcons swept 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-20).  Once again, sophomore Mikayla Ide displayed her all-around skills with 7 kills, 6 digs, and 3 service aces.  Freshman Mackenzie Natusch had a good game as well with 8 kills and 3 blocks, and sophomore defensive specialist Maria Rivera tallied 15 digs.

The Falcons will play at traditional powerhouse Fresno on Wednesday and follow that with a trip to Cupertino on Friday to face De Anza.
