Women's Soccer Open Season With Win

The Falcon women picked up where they left off last season, sending waves of talented players at an overmatched Lassen squad.  Freshman Paige Florio scored the Falcons' first goal of 2015 off a nice cross from Sami Thomas at the 10 minute mark.  Nine minutes later, Lassen answered back with a goal of their own off a free kick, but the tie wouldn't last long.  In the 23rd minute, sophomore Jaqui Ortega pounced on a deflection by the goalie and stuck it in the goal.  The 2-1 Falcon lead remained for the rest of the half.

Four minutes into the second half, another great cross from Thomas found freshman Alyssa Gallagher in front of the goal, where she put it by the near post for a 3-1 lead.  Not satisfied with handing out assists, Thomas used some of her great speed and hustle in the 65th minute as she scored off another deflection from the goalie for the Falcons' final goal.  With her goal and two assists, Sami Thomas earned "Player of the Game" honors from the FLC coaching staff.

With a match against in-district rival Cosumnes River looming on Tuesday afternoon, the Falcons can't afford to bask in the glow of victory for too long.  The Hawks ended the Falcons' 2014 season on a cold, foggy night last November with a tense 1-0 victory in the first round of the state playoffs.  On Tuesday they'll face off at CRC at 4:00 pm.  The next home match for the Falcons will be on Friday Sept 11 when they host Hartnell College (another 2014 playoff team) at 6:00 pm.
