Falcons split doubleheader with Big 8 leader CRC

Perched atop the Big 8 Conference with a 5-0 record, the Cosumnes River softball team hosted Folsom Lake for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, and after taking the opening game 6-0, was looking for a sweep to remain undefeated in Big 8 play.  But the Falcons would have none of it as they shut out the Hawks, 3-0, to earn a split and make a statement that they are a legitimate contender.

In the opener, CRC pitcher Ashley Toy was dominant for seven innings, allowing just four singles while striking out eight Falcons.  The Hawks manufactured a run in the first inning, then added three in the third and two more in the sixth to win, 6-0.

In the late game,  Adriana Gonzalez did it all for the Falcons, pitching seven shutout innings while striking out six, plus hitting her first home run of the season in the second inning for the only run the Falcons would need.  The Falcons added a run in the third on an RBI double by Lilly Alvarez, then tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when catcher Mikaela Pamplona stole home on a double steal.

With the win, the Falcons improved to 12-7 overall and 4-2 in the Big 8 Conference, easily the best start in program history.  They'll travel to Pleasant Hill on Tuesday to take on Diablo Valley (6-12, 1-7), then host Big 8 co-leader Sierra (17-6, 6-1) for a doubleheader on Saturday.
