Falcons take both ends of doubleheader to open 2020

The Falcons opened their 2020 season at home on Saturday with a doubleheader against Butte and both games came out in the Falcons' favor.  In Saturday's opener, sophomore Gigi Mendez kept the Roadrunners' bats in check with a complete game 6-hitter to help her team to a 2-1 win.  Down 1-0, the Falcons tied the game in the third when catcher Emma Gaytan singled in Ariana Riojas to make it 1-1.  With the score still tied in the sixth inning, Emma Gaytan led off with a single and went to third on a Gabby Robles double.  Gayton then scored what would be the winning run on a pinch hit single by Jailene Salceido.  Mendez then worked around a one-out single to shut the Roadrunners down in the seventh for the win.

In game 2, the Falcons jumped ahead 3-0 in the second inning on rbi singles by Ariana Riojas (2 rbi) and Emma Gaytan that scored Gabby Robles, Adriana Bridges, and Riojas.  Those were the only runs that freshman lefty Kelsey Wurm would need as she shut down the Roadrunners on seven hits and one run – with no walks - for the complete-game 3-1 victory.

The Falcons will travel to Ukiah on Tuesday to play Mendocino College in a doubleheader at 12:00 and 2:00 pm, then return home for a Friday doubleheader against Lassen at 11:00 and 1:00 pm.
