Falcons' comeback falls short vs CRC

Despite jumping out to an early 2-0 lead, the Falcons lost to Cosumnes River on Wednesday afternoon, 6-4, at Falcon Diamond.  Shortstop Jessi Lawhorn led off the first inning with a booming triple to right-center and scored on Hannah Harvey's double for the first run of the game.  After a pop-out, Araya Corral singled home Harvey for a 2-0 lead.  With Gigi Mendez mixing up her pitches, the Hawks were stymied until two outs in the fourth inning, when suddenly Mendez lost her command.  After two quick outs,, she then walked two batters before giving up a game-tying two-run double.  After Olivia Aguigam took over for Mendez, another double gave the Hawks their first lead of the game, 3-2.  The Hawks added three more in the fifth, but the falcons rallied in their half of the fifth and, if not for some bad luck, might have put a crooked number up.  After a one-out single by left fielder Makenna Tagye, Lawhorn crushed another shot to right center that was an easy triple until she stumbled rounding second and went sprawling in the dirt with a sprained ankle.  Unable to get to her feet, the Hawks tagged her out for the second out of the inning, thereby killing a potential big rally.  Still, the Falcons made it interesting in the bottom half of the seventh, when they loaded the bases with two outs.  Kylee Boykin's RBI single made it 6-4, but Araya Corral left the bags full when she struck out to end the game.

The Falcons (2-12 in Big 8 play) will play Santa Rosa (1-9 in Big 8) three times next week; once in Santa Rosa on Tuesday and twice at Falcon Diamond on Thursday in a make-up doubleheader postponed by rain.
