Falcons split with Feather River

Falcons split with Feather River

Another frigid afternoon greeted the Falcons on Tuesday as they played host to Feather River for a doubleheader at Falcon Diamond.  In the opener, a good old-fashioned pitcher's duel saw Falcon Gigi Mendez and Golden Eagle Caitlin Lotspeich match zeroes for five innings.  The Eagles finally broke through in the 5th with a bloop single, then scored on a throwing error after a sacrifice bunt for what turned out to be the only run of the game.  Despite allowing just four hits and no earned runs while striking out 10 Eagles' batters, Mendez suffered the hard-luck loss.

In game two, the Falcons put up two runs in the first inning only to see the Eagles tie it up in the 4th.  Thanks to some 'heads up' base-running by Gigi Mendez, the Falcons retook the lead when Mendez advanced all the way to third on a bunt, then scored on an infield error.  With a 1-run lead, Mendez then took over on the mound for starter Liv Aguigam and shut the Eagles down for the final three innings.  The Falcons added two insurance runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Araya Corral and a double by Mendez.  The win improved the Falcons' record to 3-7.  They'll play a doubleheader at Butte today (Thursday) and open Big 8 Conference play against Diablo Valley at home on Saturday.
