Falcons win Big 8 title with tournament victory
The Folsom Lake College men's golf team not only won Monday's Big 8 tournament #12 at Windsor Golf Club in Santa Rosa, but grabbed the 2017 Big 8 Conference championship at the same time. The Falcons finally had five scoring players at 80 or below, and it earned them a victory with a team score of 377, which was 20 strokes ahead of second-place Santa Rosa and Napa Valley. Sophomore Mason Troike shot a three-under-par 69 to lead the Falcons, while steady freshman Connor Gaymon recorded a one-over 73. Connor Scott didn't let a horrific front nine ruin his day, as he rebounded from a 46 to shoot 34 on the back for a respectable 80.
The Big 8 title is the third in the last four years and fourth overall for head coach Barry Zarecky and his Falcons. "I'm just happy to see us starting to play the way I know we can," noted Zarecky. "We've been so inconsistent lately; maybe we're peaking at just the right time."
With the title in hand, tomorrow's final Big 8 tournament will be stress-free for the Falcons. They can begin to focus on the Norcal Regional championship, scheduled for Monday May 8 at Spanos Reserve in Stockton.
