Unimaginable 9th inning rally lifts CRC to stunning victory over Falcons

After 13 months without an official game, the Folsom Lake baseball team took the field on Friday afternoon at "the Lake" against Cosumnes River.  What transpired over the next 3+ hours is hard to describe, and even harder to believe.

After allowing a first-inning home run, Falcon freshman lefty Skylar Wells would not allow another hit in his four innings of work while striking out nine Hawks.  Meanwhile, the Falcons scored early and often, building a 6-1 lead after five innings.  The Hawks added two unearned runs in the sixth without recording a hit, then scored three in the seventh off two home runs to cut the Falcons' lead to 8-6.  At this point, the Hawks still had only three hits in the game.

The Falcons looked for the world like they had put the game out of reach with five runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth, taking a 16-6 lead into the final frame.  The ninth inning can only be described as a Falcon nightmare.  Twelve consecutive Hawks reached base before an out was recorded.  Seven hits, four walks, and a hit batter (not in that order) combined to cut the lead to 16-15 with the bases loaded and nobody out.  Somehow, the Falcons erased the next two batters on an infield grounder and a popup and now had a chance pull this one out.  But the Hawks' next batter tripled to deep right to clear the bases, and now they led 18-16.

The Falcons could only muster a walk in their half of the ninth, and the Hawks celebrated a very unlikely victory.
