Baseball opens BVC schedule with loud win

The Falcons opened their Bay Valley Conference schedule at Falcon Field on Tuesday night with an 8-1 victory over Los Medanos.  The game started ominously for the Falcons when LMC's Jon Allen hit the first pitch of the game over the right-center field fence for a 1-0 lead.  Allen's ridiculously slow trot/shuffle around the bases seemed to inspire Falcon pitcher Will Felton, as he would allow just one more hit over the next 7+ innings.  With Felton pitching a gem, the Falcon offense began to come alive as the game wore on.  Third baseman Kale Leach had a home run robbed in left field to end the second, but it was clear the Falcon offense was catching up to the Mustang's pitcher.  The Falcons took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on Nick Schumacher's bases-loaded single that scored Tyler Kaim and Mason Allen.  Allen provided a cushion when he hit a solo home run to left in the sixth inning, making it 3-1.   The game was still a tight pitchers' duel when the Falcons' Mike Majeski walked to lead off the eighth.  That prompted a pitching change for the Mustangs, and the pitchers' duel was over.  A walk and two hit batters later, the Falcons had another run in and Nick Schumacher was standing at the plate with the bases full.  Schu then launched a high, deep drive to left that cleared the fence for the first grand slam in Falcon baseball history and an 8-1 Falcon lead.  The six RBI in one game was also a Falcon first.

Falcon head coach Rich Gregory was pleased with the way his team played, noting, "We finally did a lot of things right.  We got great pitching, didn't make any errors, and had good at-bats.  That was a nice start to the conference season for us."
