Baseball Splits Weekend Series With Monterrey

The FLC baseball season continued with a Friday night blowout win (15-8) and a Saturday afternoon loss (4-1) to Monterey Peninsula College.  On a wet and misty Friday evening, the Falcons were trailing 6-5 when they broke open a seesaw battle with nine runs in the sixth inning.  In that inning, the Falcons sent ten batters to the plate before making an out, capitalizing on the Lobos' mistakes (3 walks, 1 hit batter, 3 passed balls, 5 wild pitches, and 1 error) and four Falcon hits.  Jason Wullenwaber earned the win with five solid innings of relief while allowing just two unearned runs.  Right fielder Tyler Kaim and designated hitter Dulon Stevens each had three hits in four at-bats to lead the offense.

On Saturday, the Falcon bats (which had totaled 35 runs over the last three games) could not muster a rally as Lobo starter Dylan Thorp kept FLC in check throughout the afternoon, allowing just one run over seven innings.  Falcon Starter Will Felton and reliever Craig Stafford were nearly as stingy, combining to allow just one earned run (in the 1st , off Felton) over eight innings.  But it was the Falcons' throwing errors that gave the game away as Monterey tallied three unearned runs in the middle innings to take a 4-1 lead by the sixth.  Tyler Kaim raised his team-leading batting average to .425 with five hits in eight at-bats over the weekend.
