Baseball Comeback Falls One Run Short

Down by five runs to Mendocino College entering the bottom of the ninth inning of Saturday's Bay Valley Conference game at Falcon Field, the FLC baseball team staged a stirring comeback that ended with the potential tying run stranded at third base and the winning run at first.  The Falcons gave their fans plenty of hope in the ninth as they capitalized on three clutch hits and an error on Mendocino's center fielder - off of Austin Wailes' deep drive - to close the score to 7-6.  Three batters later, with runners on first and third and one out, a sinking line drive to left off the bat of FP Santangelo looked like it would tie the game, but the Eagles' left fielder charged and caught the ball for the second out of the inning and prevented Nick Schumacher from scoring from third.  The game ended when Mike Majeski sent a smash to center that had the Eagles' fans holding their breath until it was caught for the final out.

The Falcons actually outhit the Eagles, 11-7, and committed one less error than their opponent (4-3), but were unable to bunch their hits together (except in the ninth).  Shortstop Grant Heisinger had two doubles and scored, right fielder Tyler Kaim singled, doubled, and scored, and DH Nick Schumacher scored twice.
