Women’s volleyball upsets Sierra to qualify for state championship tournament!!

It may have been played at Sierra College, but it sounded more like a home match for the Folsom Lake College women's volleyball team on Saturday night in Round 2 of the CCCAA state playoffs.  A raucous contingent of Falcon parents and particularly FLC student athletes (the Flock?) turned out in Rocklin to witness a Folsom Lake 4-set victory over the higher-seeded Wolverines, 22-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-20.  The first set was a seesaw affair, with both teams making runs of points before Sierra won it.  Utilizing great defensive play from the back row – Meggie Bolstad and Deonna Robinson in particular - the resilient Falcons bounced back and looked dominant as they tied the match with an easy victory in set 2.  The third set was the tightest, with neither team gaining more than a two point lead at any time.  After a timeout with the score tied at 21, the Falcons scored four of the next six points to win the set and take control of the match.  The Wolverines appeared to know their fate in the fourth set as the Falcons built a seven point lead, then held off a late push to win by five.  Sophomores Kylie Haverson and Emma Flewell were instrumental in the victory with their play at the net.  Flewell, who missed all summer with a severe ankle injury, is finally starting to look the player she was in 2016.  "My ankle didn't bother me at all tonight," noted the middle hitter who stymied Sierra's attack with numerous blocks.  "That's the best I've felt since my injury."

With the win, the Falcons (24-4) have advanced to the CCCAA state championship tournament at Solano College in Fairfield on Saturday, Dec. 2.  As the 4th seed from the north, they'll have the tough assignment of facing the south's number 1 seed, undefeated Irvine Valley College (24-0) on Saturday morning at 9:00 am.  The winner will advance to the state semi-finals on Saturday evening at 5:00, with the championship finals being played on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
