Falcons fall to Delta in 5-set nailbiter

Wednesday night's battle for first place in the Big 8 Conference lived up to the hype as the Folsom Lake and Delta College volleyball teams went toe-to-toe for five sets, with Delta eventually coming out on top 25-23, 25-16, 9-25, 20-25, and 15-8.  The Falcons started slowly, falling behind by eight points early in set one before roaring back to nearly win the set.  After a convincing loss in set two and with their backs against the wall, the Falcons responded with their best volleyball of the night to easily win sets three and four.  Unfortunately, the magic disappeared in the deciding set as the Mustangs pulled away to take sole possession of the Big 8 lead.  The silver lining in the loss was the noticeable improvement in Emma Flewell's mobility and overall play after suffering a serious ankle dislocation last spring.  The middle hitter was a force at the net, recording numerous blocks alongside Kate Nicknig and Analyse Stapleton.  Kylie Haverson had her usual big game as she led the Falcons in kills once again.   That the Falcons nearly won the match while playing less than their best gives hope to their rematch at Delta on November 10.
Looking forward, the Falcons host cross-town rival American River on Friday night at 6:30 in what should be another spirited match.
