Falcons suffer first loss of 2019

The Falcons went in to Rocklin on Friday afternoon with a share of first place in the Big 8 and an undefeated record of 10-0-1, but lost a seriously close battle against Sierra, 3-2.  The Falcons started the scoring with an early goal by freshman Michaela Clark – her first of two on the day – and looked like they would run away from the Wolverines as they dominated possession time and pelted the goal with shots.  Two of those shots hit the post, while the others were stopped by Sierra's goalkeeper, allowing the Wolverines to stay close.  After Sierra scored to tie the match in the 40th minute, the teams went 35 minutes before another goal was scored.  With some offensive adjustments at halftime, the momentum that the Falcons had in the first half shifted to the Wolverines in the second half.  Sierra took a 2-1 lead in the 75th minute, only to see Michaela Clark tie the score a minute later with her second goal  (and second assist from Emily Doty).  But momentum is a fickle thing, and the Wolverines retaliated with what turned out to be the winning goal five minutes later, then fought off the Falcons' desperation attack to secure the 3-2 win.

The disheartening loss leaves the Falcons at 10-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 and tied for 2nd place in the Big 8.  The Falcons will conclude the first half of their Big 8 schedule on Tuesday afternoon when they host Cosumnes River at 3:30 pm.
