Falcons, Mustangs go toe-to-toe for 3rd time in 2018

The Falcons' opening round victory over DVC enabled them to advance to the second round of the playoffs and a rematch with Big 8 Conference foe Delta College.  The two teams met on Saturday afternoon, November 24, at Falcon Stadium, the third time they'd met this season.  In the two previous matches, the home team prevailed each time by just one goal (1-0 at FLC, 2-1 at Delta).   With the home field advantage, the Falcons had high hopes of advancing to round three yet again.

From the opening kickoff, it was apparent this would be a close battle.  Both teams defended extremely well, with neither side able to get many chances for shots.  The first half ended without any goals scored.  Early in the second half a Falcon foul in the Mustangs' goal box resulted in a dreaded penalty kick, and the visitors took advantage with a well-placed PK past the diving Izzy Chinchay.  With a one goal advantage, the Mustangs looked confident and controlled the tempo for much of the second half.  The Falcons' few chances gave hope but none found the net, and the Mustangs danced on the FLC turf when the final whistle sounded.

The 1-0 loss was just the third time in 23 matches that the Falcons failed to score.  The Falcons finished with a 17-5-1 record, scoring 76 goals while allowing just 13.  With just two sophomores departing, the team looks loaded for 2019.
