Falcons squander chances against #7 team in the state

Playing against the state's seventh ranked team, the FLC softball team went toe-to-toe with Delta College (16-2) for four innings before the Mustangs pulled away for a 'closer-than-it-sounds' 10-5 victory.  Falcon starter Gigi Mendez was locked in a tight pitcher's duel against Delta's Delancy Pamplin with the score tied 1-1 in the fifth, when with two on and two out, the Mustangs strung together a single, a double, and a home run for a sudden 6-1 lead.  The Falcons didn't quit, however, and responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth, punctuated by Mickayla Burnett's two-run homer to the opposite field.  Araya Corral followed Katie Thompson's single with an RBI triple to make the score 6-4, and suddenly it was a ballgame again.  One inning later, the Mustangs answered with three consecutive two-out walks before a bases clearing triple made it 9-4.  Those three walks were the only ones issued all game by the Falcons, and they all wound up scoring.  Burnett had another RBI in the sixth with her line drive single to right, but that would complete the scoring for the Falcons.

The Falcons (1-5 in Big 8, 5-13 overall) will travel to Solano for a non-conference makeup game on Thursday, then play a doubleheader on Saturday at Sacramento City.
