Falcons lose two at Cosumnes River

With a rare day without any rain, the Falcons and Hawks played a makeup of their rained-out doubleheader from March 2 on Friday afternoon with the Hawks coming out on top twice, 2-0 and 9-4.  In the opener, the Falcons wasted an outstanding pitching effort by starter Gigi Mendez, who allowed just 2 runs on seven hits (all singles) while striking out seven batters.  But the Falcon offense could't get the clutch hit they needed, leaving runners on base in four innings and hitting into inning-ending double playes in two others.

In game two, the Falcon bats came to life with 10 hits, four of them doubles.  Bib Burnett and Valerie Garcia had three hits apiece, including two doubles by Garcia.  But once again, leaving runners on base cost the Falcons as they stranded 11 baserunners.  Despite the loss, Falcon head coach Amber Grahlman was positive about her team's play.  "We're starting to play much better softball," noted Grahlman.  "With a some timely hitting, we had a chance to win one of those games.  But at least we're moving in the right direction."

The Falcons will host Delta on Tuesday, then travel to Fairfield for a non-conference makeup doubleheader at Solano on Thursday.
