Falcons open Big 8 with split vs DVC

On Saturday, the Falcons opened their Big 8 schedule with a doubleheader split against Diablo Valley at Falcon Diamond, winning 4-3 and losing 6-3.  In the opener, Falcon pitcher Gigi Mendez allowed just 3 Viking hits, keeping her team in the game until their bats came alive in the fourth inning.  Trailing 3-0, the Falcons scored four times with two outs, the key hit being Sydney DaRold's 2-run triple that tied the score.  Shortstop Jessi Lawhorn then singled to right, driving in the eventual game-winning run.  Mendez proceeded to shut down the Vikings over the final three innings to preserve the win.

In game two, the Falcons erased an early 2-0 Viking lead with a run in the second and two in the third, thanks to a monstrous 2-run homer to center field by Bib Burnett.  That lead vanished the following inning when the Vikings tallied two runs, and the Falcons were never able to respond.  Aside from Burnett's bomb, the offense provided little except from catcher Savannah Avellaneda, who had two hits and an RBI.
