Falcons break through against strong Delta squad

Facing a very tough Delta College squad in a match to determine second place in the Big 8, the FLC men prevailed on Tuesday night at Falcon Stadium, 2-0.  The match was every bit as close as the first time these teams played on September 27 in Stockton when they tied 0-0.  After a scoreless first half that saw the Falcons put eight shots on goal, they final broke through in the 60th minute when sophomore Ethan Viers created an open shot off a rebound and nailed the top right corner of the net.  The Mustangs, now desperate for a tying goal, continued to look for a crack in the Falcon defense but never succeeded.  In the final minute, with Delta's defenders playing at the offensive end in desperation mode, FLC's Zwannah Johnson broke free for a one-on-one attempt that the Mustang goalkeeper somehow stopped.  But an opportunistic Ethan Atterberry collected the ball and fired it into the net for an insurance goal as the Falcons celebrated.

The Falcons now sit alone in second place in the Big 8 at 4-1-2 with three regular-season matches remaining.  They will host cross-town rival American River (4th place at 3-3-1) on Friday evening at 6:00 pm, then travel to Cosumnes River and Santa Rosa for the final two matches next week.
