Falcons defeat American River to capture first Big 8 title!!!

In their fourth season of intercollegiate competition, the Folsom Lake men's soccer team achieved an elusive goal with their 1-0 victory at American River on Tuesday afternoon:  their first-ever conference championship.  Luis Aguilar's unassisted goal midway through the first half – his team-leading 9th of the season - provided all the scoring the Falcons would need.  Falcon defenders Austyn Ciampa and Omar Sosa teamed up to help prevent the Beavers' offense from getting off many shots, and goalkeeper Kody Madore preserved the shutout (and victory) with a heroic last-second save.  With the win, the Falcons maintained their 5-point lead over second place Cosumnes River – who also won yesterday, over Modesto – meaning regardless of Friday's head-to-head outcome, the Falcons are the 2017 Big 8 champs.  Even with the title in hand, the CRC match is not meaningless as the Falcons will look to improve on their 7-1-1 Big 8 record (13-3-4 overall) for playoff seeding purposes.  The CCCAA state playoff pairings will be announced next Wednesday, Nov. 15, with the playoffs starting on Saturday, Nov. 18.
