Falcons take 5th in state; Sorrentino crowned individual State Champion!

The Folsom Lake men's golf team, after a disappointing fourth-place finish last week at the NorCal Regionals, redeemed themselves with a fifth place finish in the CCCAA State Championship tournament at Soboba Country Club in San Jacinto on Monday.  The Falcons shot 736 for the 36-hole tournament (370 in the morning, 366 in the afternoon) to finish just two strokes behind fourth-place Cypress and six strokes back of third-place Reedley.  College of the Canyons won their second consecutive title with a team score of 720 and Saddleback finished right behind at 722.  

Falcon freshman Giacomo Sorrentino turned in the team's best score and captured the individual Low Medalist title with rounds of 69/70 for 139.  Sorrentino is the first Folsom Lake College athlete to win an individual state title in any sport!  

"The first round went kind of smooth leading to an even front nine," said Sorrentino. "I picked it up with four birdies. The second round I was tired, but stayed bogey-free on the back and it was good to make some putts coming down the stretch.  I just tried to take it hole by hole and space out my shots by looking around. It's tough to lock in for 10 hours."

For retiring FLC golf coach Barry Zarecky, it was a bittersweet finish.  His teams have qualified for the state tournament six times in his 11 comlete seasons (two state tournaments were canceled by COVID) with 2019 being their highest finish at fourth.  This team shot their best rounds of the entire season on Monday yet still came up short.  Not counting the Falcons' first season (those results are missing), Zarecky's teams have amassed a regular season record of 743-114 in regular-season matches and tournaments, an astounding .867 winning percentage over 11 years!
