Golfers finish disappointing sixth at regionals
The high-flying Folsom Lake College men's golf team – the 2018 Big 8 Conference champions and winners of 10 consecutive Big 8 tournaments between February 26 and April 23 – had their wings clipped on Monday in the CCCAA NorCal Regional championship tournament at Dragonfly Golf Club outside Madera, where they finished a disappointing sixth place and failed in their quest to reach next week's state championship tournament. The Falcons finished just six strokes behind Sierra and Taft, who tied for fourth, with a 36-hole total of 768. The Falcons had dug themselves a hole with a morning-round score of 390 and, despite recovering with a 378 in the afternoon, could not make up the deficit. Meanwhile, Big 8 Conference runner-up Sierra will play in the state championship as the final qualifying team from the north, thanks to the tie-breaker (sixth man score of the 2nd round). The Falcons will have two players in the state championship who qualified as individuals – Max Menconi (150) and Brandon Kelly (150), – but that was clearly not the ultimate goal of the team.
