Falcons stymied by Sac City

The Falcons entered this week's series against Sac City needing a three-game sweep to overtake the Panthers for fourth place in the Big 8, but that dream vanished with a 6-1 loss at Union Stadium in Sacramento on Tuesday night.  The Falcons had reason for optimism when centerfielder John Mook scored the game's first run in the first inning on a Josh Winkler RBI single,  but the Panthers' pitchers would shut out the Falcons on four hits the rest of the night.  The Panthers, meanwhile, took control in the fourth inning with a two-out rally – helped by two walks and punctuated by a two-run triple - that netted four runs.  On the bright side, John Mook had three of the Falcons' six hits, raising his team-leading batting average to a lofty .437 (3rd in the state) and on base percentage to .532 (5th in California).

The Falcons will host Sac City on Thursday night (6:00 pm; bring the family, hot dogs will be available!) in their final home game of the season before closing out the regular season on Friday at Sac City (6:00 pm).
