Falcon bats wake up in time to avoid a sweep

Down 4-0 in the sixth inning with just one hit and facing a 3-game sweep by Diablo Valley, the Folsom Lake baseball team needed an offensive jolt in the worst way on Sunday afternoon.  Sophomore right fielder Aidan Malm proved to be the right man at the right time as he launched a 2-run, 400-foot home run to left field that awoke the Falcons and began a two-inning comeback that ultimately led to a much-needed 7-5 victory over the Vikings.  The Falcons had already lost twice earlier in the week to DVC – both by just one run – to open Big 8 Conference play and were desperate for a win.  After Malm's homer closed the gap to 4-2, the Falcons added one more run in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Andrew Williams.  But after the Vikings answered back with a run in the top half of the seventh for a 5-3 lead, Malm put his hot bat to work again, this time with a one-out double to left that scored John Mook from second.  Josh Winkler followed with an RBI single to tie the game at five, and Lee Brewer put the Falcons ahead with an RBI double.  Andrew Williams' RBi single provided an insurance run to make it 7-5.  From there, the Falcon bullpen took over as Shane Gustafson and shortstop/closer Josh Winkler shut down the Vikings over the final two innings.  With the win, the Falcons improved their overall record to 13-3, but more importantly, avoided the sweep by DVC to open Big 8 play.  The Falcons will play Delta this week, with home games on Tuesday and Saturday and in Stockton on Thursday.
