Ninth inning rally falls short, Falcons edged by Fresno, 6-5

The Falcons' two-game winning streak came to an end on Monday night at Falcon Field as the Fresno City Rams held off a ninth-inning FLC rally that came up one run short.  Starter Cody Lindsey pitched six strong innings and left with the game tied 3-3, but the Falcon bullpen couldn't get the job done.  Fresno put up 2 runs in the seventh, then added a crucial run in the ninth – on a walk, ground out, wild pitch, and sacrifice fly – that proved to be the difference.  Down by three in the bottom of the ninth, freshman second baseman John Mook led off with a single.  After advancing to third on a couple of balks, he scored when Carson McCusker's towering fly ball was misplayed in left field.  With McCusker now at second, Aidan Malm drove him home with a single that pulled the Falcons within one.  Malm may have cost the Falcons the tying run as he was thrown out by 15 feet trying to advance to second on the throw home.  With two outs, Jack Rotteveel singled to keep the inning alive and represent the potential tying run.  Third baseman Josh Winkler then almost won the game with a blast to left-center – the deepest part of the yard - that came down in the center fielder's glove some 385 feet from home plate.   Missed it by that much…
