2018-19 Falcon Student-Athletes Honored at 5th Annual Athletic Awards Night

The Folsom Lake College athletic department honored their 2018-19 outstanding student athletes and teams on Wednesday night, May 15, during the 5th annual Athletic Awards Night at the Harris Center Stage Two.  Dean/Athletic Director Matt Wright emceed the hour-long event, which included recognition of the 30+ student-athletes who have signed National Letters of Intent, the 2019 graduating student-athletes, the 60+ Scholar Athletes (3.0 GPA or better in-season, including 12 with 4.0), the Big 8 All-Conference and regional/state/national award winners, and the athletic department's featured awards: the Scholar Team Award, the Fighting Falcon Award, the Male and Female Athlete of the Year, and finally, the  Bruce Werner "Falcon of the Year" Award.    Also highlighted was the "Year in Pictures" slide show/video, a compilation of photos from the 2018-19 school year highlighting each of the ten athletic teams at Folsom Lake College.

The featured award winners:

The Scholar Team Award went to the WOMEN'S SOCCER team, which earned an impressive 3.48 cumulative team GPA during their fall sport season.

Fighting Falcon Award:  Katie Thompson (sophomore, women's softball)

This award is given to a member of the Falcon athletic family who has overcome tremendous odds to go to college and compete in intercollegiate athletics or that, at some point in their career at FLC, experienced hardship that could have derailed their commitment to attend college and compete athletically.

Katie came to FLC in fall 2018 as a transfer from Reedley College following her freshman season.  For the Falcons in 2019, she achieved some very exciting things on the softball diamond, hitting .301 with a .370 on-base percentage.  But her off-the-field accomplishments are even more impressive: she accumulated the most study hall hours on the team this year on her way to a 3.54 GPA.  She devoted countless hours to improving in the classroom and on the field.  Remarkably, she did all of this as a student athlete with autism.  Katie has demonstrated a commitment to both her education and athletics that has earned her a scholarship to San Diego Christian College.

Female Athlete of the YearCaitlin Dillon (freshman, women's volleyball)

Caitlin had an outstanding freshman season for the Falcons as she led the Big 8 Conference in kills and in kills-per-set, despite missing several matches with a pulled muscle.   She was named to the Big 8 All-Conference team and will be a cornerstone for the 2019-20 team.

Male Athlete of the YearZethan Dumpson (sophomore, men's basketball)

Zethan is FLC's all-time leading scorer after his two years as a Falcon, totaling over 1000 points in his Folsom Lake career.  He was named to the Big 8 All-Conference first team after averaging over 17 points per game in 2018-19.

Bruce Werner "Falcon of the Year"Riley Spitzer (sophomore, women's soccer)

The Bruce Werner Falcon of the Year Award is given to only one athlete every year.  This award is named after Dr. Bruce Werner, who over the years and in many different roles was instrumental in bringing athletics to Folsom Lake College.  To be considered for this award the recipient must have a proven ability in their sport, a minimum 3.0 GPA, and a commitment to serving the community.  This individual truly represents what it means to be a Falcon.

Riley is a two-time Big 8 All-conference selection who started 42 of the 44 games women's soccer played in the last two years.  In her career at FLC she has scored 25 goals, amassed 13 assists, and had 6 game winning goals.  She helped lead women's soccer to 4 CCCAA playoff wins, one conference title, and a final four appearance.  Every year she participates in the 'Feed the Hungry" program with the Salvation Army, and she has done all of this while maintaining a 3.5 GPA.  Riley has accepted a scholarship to continue her collegiate soccer career at Cal State East Bay.
